NASCAR Drivers Ryan Newman and Regan Smith Better On The Race Track Than The Bowling Lane
The 2nd Annual Bowling for Fur event to benefit the Humane Society of Iredell raised over $10,000 to save orphaned and neglected animals of Iredell County. Local celebrities like NASCAR drivers Ryan Newman and Regan Smith came out to bowl in this year’s event. When asked about their performance off the track, both were quick to state they would not be leaving racing for a career in bowling anytime soon.
“My wife Krissie is on the board of directors for HSI, so I’m always willing to do whatever I can to help the animals,” Newman said when he was asked about the event. “Bowling is something I really enjoy; I just wasn’t doing as good as I had hoped. My excuse was my sore arm from going snowmobiling back in January, so I didn’t take it as serious as I should have. I guess I’m always thinking about racing, because at the end of the night a group of us were trying to see how fast we could throw the balls down the lane instead of seeing how many pins we would take down. “
“I was happy to take part in a great event that promoted a great cause,” said Smith. “My family and I have always been a strong supporter of the Humane Society, so whatever we can do for the betterment of animals, I am 100 percent behind it. Regarding bowling, no excuses from me I am just not that good at it. But I enjoyed bowling with Ryan — it was a festive and fun event.”
Funds raised at this year’s event will provide animals in the HSI Adoption Program the necessary medical care, spay and neuter surgeries, and food needed to become adoptable pets. Funds will also help HSI provide food to pet owners in need as part of the HSI Food Bank Program which started in 2008. The food bank program has successfully allowed financially struggling pet owners the opportunity to keep their pets while they try to better their financial situation. Since its inception, HSI’s food bank has supplied over 20,000 lbs of food to pet owners in need.
Sponsors of this year’s event were: AJ and Lynne Allmendinger, Brawley Animal Hospital, Country Boy Landscaping Inc., David Gilliland and Family, Humane Society Board of Directors, JR Motorsports, Martin Truex Jr. Foundation, NASCAR, Premier Real Estate Network, Race City Paint and Body, Randy Marion, Regan Smith Racing, David and Lisa Reutimann, R.L. Smith Inc., Ryan Newman Fan Club, Ryan Newman Foundation, Ryan Newman Motorsports, SunTrust, and George Pappa’s Victory Lanes.
The results from the bowling event have Donna Heck as the individual with the highest total scratch individual score for the day. The team with the highest total scratch team score was JR Motorsports, comprised of the following members: Donna and John Heck, Robby Kufhta and Jill Roach.
The Humane Society of Iredell does not receive any funding from the state, county, or from the Humane Society of the United States. HSI depends on private donors and events such as this tournament to raise the funds necessary to fulfill its mission.
